Gary – From Winchester
Question
Hi Captain,
I always use a condom, it’s better to be safe than sorry! So I’ve never had a Chlamydia test, I don’t see the point. I’ve just met this new girl and she’s saying I have to have a test before she’ll even think of having sex with me, is there anything you can tell her so she can stop worrying.

Answer
Hi Gary,
I’m afraid I can’t tell her anything, you see, she’s absolutely right that you should still have a Chlamydia test. It’s great that you always use condoms, that gets a Captain Chlamydia seal of approval, but they are not 100% effective. We think they reduce your risk of getting Chlamydia by almost a half so it’s important that you always have a test everytime you have a new sexual partner, or every year otherwise.
That doesn’t mean you can get away with not wearing condoms though, if you are having sex they are the only way to protect yourself from Chlamydia, as well as other STIs. But you must make sure you are using them correctly, click here for a short video on how you should use them. And if you have any problems putting them on you could always try this!
